Beryl Cook is one of Britain’s most talented & funny artists .Beryl’s pictures boast women of all anatomies & sizings enjoying themselves .Born between the 2 world wars, Beryl Cook eventually went distant Kendrick School in Reading at the old of 15, wherever she went to secretarial school & then into an policy office. After moving to London & then Hampton, she eventually married her next doorway neighbour from Reading, John Cook. He was an officer in the Merchant Navy & after he went distant the ocean in 1956, they bought a tavern for a year earlier John took a business in Southern Rhodesia with a motor company. Beryl bought their youthful son a package of watercolours, & when showing him how to use it, she resolved that she herself rather savored painting. John subsequently bought her a child’s painting set for her birthday & it was with this that she developed her premier substantial work, a half-length portrait of a dark-skinned madam with a vacant term & oversized drooping breasts. It was aptly named ‘Hangover’ by Beryl’s husband & still hangs in their home today.
In 1964 Beryl Cook & her husband returned to the UK settling premier in Cornwall & then later in Plymouth where, during the summertime months, Beryl ran for a rooming home for holidaymakers on the seafront. Beryl had today been painting for a count of years, basing her pictures on her every day observations of folks around her. By 1975 she had amassed many paintings that covered the walls of their rooming house. A mate took distant a dozen or so and, to Beryl’s surprise, managed to trade them all for around ten each. Beryl was delighted & quickly gained her production. Her success came to the tending of Bernard Samuels at the Plymouth Arts Centre who persuaded her to climb her premier exhibition featuring 75 paintings. It was a trade out. The rest, as they say, is history.
An report quickly looked in the Sunday Times Magazine, followed by exhibitions at the Whitechapel & Portal Galleries in London. Her premier script ‘The Works’ was wrote in 1978. Her paintings were then reproduced as greeting cards & restricted edition publishes & shortly her labor was being featured around the world, tickling ribs from Kingston to the Cape, & generating appreciable favorite acclaim.
This favorite acclaim has been attended by serious decisive appreciation, most notably with the inclusion of her painting in the fifth Peter Moores exhibition at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool wherever she was seen in the context of mainstream contemporary art, alongside Bridges Riley & Victor Passmore. The new Glasgow Museum of Modern Art has as well newly purchased many of her original work, guaranteeing her a spot in the annuls of British Art. Beryl Cook continues to rouge & has newly moved from Plymouth to Bristol, to be near her family”
